Road Blog

Stay connected as we travel, this blog details our adventures through images and stories from the road. Look for our next big adventure, coming in early March, we will be traveling to Big Bend.

Tuesday July 26th, Garberville to Santa Rosa

We left the cool of the redwoods and decended to warmth of Santa Rosa. Santa Rosa had temps in the low 90's which reminded us of home.

Dave and Andre had to use the PA system to encourage the cows off the road.

From Garberville to Leggit was a series of hairpin turns and twists that slowed us down to 10 mph at times. When we got out of the turns we stopped at a scenic overlook.

In many of these photos you will notice that the group has a large number of buses, its primarily a bus cruise, but started as a kharmann ghia cruise.

We got to the park where the group reservations were only to find that ghere werent really group reservations. Luckily we found a few names we recognized and said "were with them." The campground was dry and dusty and had a desert feel.

We went straight to the campsite and setup, we realized we missed the planned dinner so we went with Charlie, Gary and Melissa to downtown Santa Rosa to get food.

Monday July 25th, Crescent City to Garberville

We left Mill Creek Campground and met everyone in Crescent City at The Fishmerman's Resturant. The campground was beautiful... tall redwoods and ferns everywhere.

The fog followed us throughout the entire morning. It was a mysterious drive, a weird beauty.

Near Burlington Campground they had reserved a large group picnic area and provided lunch. This was a fantastic area among the redwood trees. They had also reserved a large campground for the group abt 2 miles up the road. The reservation was for 15 vws byt we managed to fit abt 30 back there.

The schedule was pretty laid back, we drove, cruised through the huge trees and hung out near the campfire.

Sunday July 24th, Coos Bay to Crescent City, Down by the Riverside

We ate at Kozy Kitchen, which is a vintage sytle diner. The waitresses and the decor was very vintage. We headed out abt 9am towards the California border.

We drove a few hours south and stopped for a picnic lunch by a river. The riverbed rocks were very unstable and many of the VWs got stuck. It became an excercise in teamwork to rescue them. The lowered buses and ghia's were the worst victims.

It was a good time even though many got stuck. The breeze was cool and several people and dogs went swimming in the river.

By this time the lead bus, the one sponsored by Airhead Parts had broken 3 straps on the generator and needed a new alternator, fan and stand. Brad offered to fix it for them. That night we had a bbq dinner sponsored by a local shop. After that Brad went to work. Here are some images from the show.

Brads been busy helping several different people today. The image above is just one, they keep asking him for advice.

We drove through the town of Tilamook and noticed the "baby loaf" buses at the cheese factory. We wanted to stop, but time wasnt permitting.

We stopped in Newport for lunch. Newport was sort of an organizational disaster, no parking and everyone everywhere. We decided to find a resturant away from the group and make it simple. We ate at Local Ocean Resturant. It was recommended online and we had a nice view of the harbor.

We drove towards Coos Bay on our own to meet up with the group around dinner time. We met at Pueblo Nuevo, a local Mexican Resturant in town. They had most of the dinning room reserved for us and they were nice people. The food itself was one step up from Taco Bell, it was rough on a Texan. I miss good salsa. We were invited by another couple to join them at one of the campsites nearby. We headed out to Sunset Bay for the evening. The organizers of Treffen actually had a fee sites reserved so it worked out for many of the campers.

Lots of Treffeners were at Sunset Bay, it was a great time. The showers were good too. We went down to the beach to photograph the sunset.
